Perfect Disaster: Solar Storms – Discovery Channel Curiosity Series

The belief that modern civilization relies too heavily on the electron can be justified by understanding the power of a Coronal Mass Ejection or even a strong solar flare. Discovery Curiosity’s show, Perfect Disaster: Solar Storms, explains the consequences of such an event on society. The show, although not providing many technical details about these storms, contains some neat “up close” visuals of the sun.

Ancient Computer – NOVA

Ancient Computer, recently released on NOVA, investigates in detail the Antikythera mechanism. This device is really stunning. Charles Babbage is usually credited with the first computer — his difference engine. However, the Antikythera mechanism shows that the first known computer was actually developed in ancient times. Perhaps even more ancient humans, like the Babylonians or Egyptians, had such machines, their devices lost or destroyed. Overview and Continuum Trailer

Planetary Trailer

Interviews with astronauts; stunning views of the Earth, the short film Overview (vimeo) gives hints that Continuum will be a great production. Looking forward to seeing Continuum. Click here for trailer (vimeo).

Zooniverse – Real Science Online

Zooniverse allows anyone to participate in scientific studies. For example, there is a project called Seafloor Explorer which allows users to scan pictures of the seafloor looking for animal species and types of ground cover to create a vast library of information. There is a project which asks for help in identifying various explosions on the sun and another which finds exoplanets around stars.
